Why let the kids have all the fun?

Adult Singing Camp – Camp’s not just for Kids!

This is a fun way to spend time this summer, getting energized and uplifted with song while escaping the fast pace of work and family life.  This is where you will actively learn to sing in harmony in a safe environment under the direction of music professionals Sandi Melody and Jeremy Vallance.  You’re in the company of like-minded, supportive people who all want to experience the benefits of song in their lives.  All you need is a desire to sing; NO EXPERIENCE REQUIRED.

      Just Clap Your Hands, STOMP

    3. Music Reading & Ear Training:  No previous experience necessary.  Our relaxed approach will give you a better understanding of music notation, by showing them how to read and sing the notes on the page using the solfege system (do, re, mi…) and the number system (1,2,3…) interchangeably.  Both systems incorporate relevant theory and are are used in post secondary music education for all instruments.  Safe and supported improv activities will be used to deepen listening skills, gain independence and build confidence.
    4. Singing, Singing, Singing:  There will be singing throughout the day from fun and silly spur of the moment songs taught by ear to dedicated written ensemble arrangements sung in 4 part harmony.  You will enjoy songs from the 1600’s – today (rock, jazz, blues, folk, pop, rap, classical, multi-cultural/world)
    5. Vocal Technique:  You will gain a better understanding of just how many ways they can use their singing voice to express themselves!  What the human voice is cabaple of doing is nothing short of AMAZING!  And contrary to what a lot of westerners think, YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE BORN WITH IT.
    6. Outdoor activities:  There is beautiful park space next door to the church and the beach is just a couple blocks away where we can all have lunch (weather permitting), have a good walk/hike, play games or just chill.
    7. A Mini Concert: There will be a mini-concert Friday afternoon to which family is invited.

Sandi Melody is a university educated vocal performance expert who has been coaching professional vocalists for 23 years.  Like any skill, becoming a great vocalist is a trainable art.  Just as good actor can play many different characters, and a painter can blend colors to create new ones, a singer can learn to mix and manipulate their sound and develop skill to sing any style of music.  From rock to pop to classical, you will discover just how many different authentic sounds they can make to express what’s in their soul!   Contemporary and classical vocal techniques will be incorporated into every song we sing.  Campers will learn to develop healthy vocal habits to produce genre specific sounds.  As they experience expressing different styles of music with the appropriate technique they will also be learning to distinguish the difference between appropriate and inappropriate sound production quality, and to protect the longevity of their voice.

Jeremy Vallance has delighted choristers and audiences for the past decade, spreading the joy of singing with humour, high energy and enthusiasm, leading choirs as large as 190 members. Currently he co-directs the recently established Spirit’s Call Choir with Sandi Melody in North Vancouver and Vancouver.  Through choir rehearsals and workshops, he has long taught that music must be fun and accessible to everyone, whatever their skill level. With positive acceptance he invites everyone into a comfortable and non-threatening atmosphere that gets them to relax, laugh and enjoy themselves while discovering they can sing together in harmony.

When  I registered for the Harmony House Choir Camp in 2017 I wasn’t too sure what to expect.
But I loved every minute of it!!!
Sandi and Jeremy are such warm talented people you immediately feel relaxed.  There is no pressure to do anything you feel you’re not ready to do. They are amazing at bringing out your best.
Yoga in the mornings to start, a great way to wake up.  A great introduction to yoga too. Very interesting learning how much yoga is tied in to singing.  We also did choir work and solo work.  Although I wasn’t brave enough to do a solo I was absolutely blown away by the energy my fellow ‘campers’ brought to the table.  We did some percussive work too.  Great fun along with some vocal techniques and a wee bit of theory.
The last day was a performance and it was so amazing to see how far we had all come in 1 week.
A wonderful experience.
All my fellow campers were so lovely, really an amazing week.  I’ve signed up again this year and am looking forward to more learning.

Harmony House Adult Choir Camp was a great week!

Other than singing in grade school and at summer camps I had no experience singing with a group!  I love music and I sing along with the radio and in the shower, but only when I am alone in the house!

I wanted to bring more music and song into my life and the adult summer camp was a very enjoyable, and challenging, way to do that. The week was packed full of new things to learn, songs to sing, lots of laughter, and new acquaintances.

It was a big leap for me but Sandi and Jeremy are supportive and encouraging and a font of musical knowledge and skill that made learning doable and fun.

The other participants were a mix of people with recent experience singing with a choir to newbies like me.

It was a wonderful week that brought more music and more joy into my life. I highly recommend it and I am going back for more!

There couldn’t have been a better way to spend a week in the summer than at the adult choir camp.   Sandi and Jeremy had a full programme planned, so we worked hard but we also laughed a lot and sang even more.   Their knowledgeable teaching style provided lots of new ideas on singing technique.   Would love to do it again and will certainly recommend it to others.
